What do the stars mean?

★ Start: place, play, save. ★★ Explore: combine tools and test ideas. ★★★ Challenge: connect areas, reuse routes, or make your own designs. Every tool is available. WELCOME, GAME DESIGNER

Your first game, step by step

  1. Build: click a piece, then paint it on the grid. Use Start and Flag to set the beginning and end.
  2. Change: try a command such as “add 5 coins” or “set jump to 14”.
  3. Bob’s Moves: watch the panel above the game for green good moves, red bad outcomes, and neutral movement.
  4. Test: click Play test. Use arrow keys or A/D to move and Space or ↑ to jump. Collect every coin and reach the flag. A key opens doors. Required Clear blocks vanish the first time Bob hits them. Clear every one before the flag unlocks. Double-bounce blocks start at 2. Land once to make them 1, then press Space, Up, or Jump in the air for a second bounce that restores the block to 2. Reuse it for another direction. Skip the extra bounce to clear it on the next landing. Bounce puzzle mode makes Bob bounce automatically; steer with Left and Right. Spikes and lava cost a life. Springs launch you. Use Up/Down on ladders. Checkpoint flags save your respawn spot. Ice is slippery. Place Portal A and B for two-way travel. Black holes send you to wormhole exits. Secret spaces are visible only while building and collect all coins in the current level.
  5. Hits, flowers and extra lives: An enemy hit takes your equipped tool. Without a tool, Bob shrinks and a glowing flower grows in the area. Touch it to grow again. A hit while small costs a life. Bob blinks briefly after a hit so you can move away. Place a Bob statue fountain from Movement & discoveries: touch it once for an extra life and a big 1 UP!
  6. Moving platforms and flying puzzles: In Movement & discoveries, choose Moving platform for side-to-side motion or Lift platform for up-and-down motion. Land on top to ride. Try a flying puzzle makes Bob move forward automatically: click or tap the game, tap Jump, or press Space for each flap. Keep tapping to rise and stop tapping to descend through the gaps.
  7. Bridges: Open Doors & connected areas, choose Bridge and drag sideways across a gap or water. Bob can walk across it and jump through from below. Erase individual pieces to change the crossing.
  8. Wild challenges: Piranhas chase in water. Tornadoes pull and toss Bob. Escape quicksand with Jump or Up plus sideways movement. Lightning clouds warn with a yellow glow and a marked column before striking. Ice holes cut through the ground; swim or jump out quickly. Skeletons and zombies can be stomped, frozen or defeated with tools. Boiling springs launch Bob high into the air.
  9. Rolling hills, volcanoes and pets: Select Rolling hill in Nature & new worlds. Click near the ground, then drag the yellow handle up or down. Erase its handle to remove it. Volcano lava costs a life. Fish and jellyfish belong in water; bats and sky drones patrol the air. In Coin powers & pets, adopt for 8 coins with B. Your pet takes the first enemy hit and returns after you lose a life or restart the level. It automatically stops one enemy every 15 seconds. Pay 20 more coins to evolve: two saves every 10 seconds.
  10. Coin powers and your designs: Place a carrot, winged shoes, or Medusa headband from Coin powers. Stand beside one and press B: 5 coins buys 15 seconds. Press B again to add time. Carrot: F / X fires laser eyes. Shoes: hold Up or Space to fly. Headband: nearby enemies freeze, then thaw after you leave. Spending coins does not erase collection progress. Open Your own designs to choose a feature and import a Piskel PNG. Restore original design removes just that replacement. Music & sound controls the game soundtrack and effects.
  11. Doors and tools: Every door needs a key. Hold Up at a Beginning door to return to the start, a Coin room door for 12 coins in 30 seconds, or an Upside-down door for this same level rotated and dark. Complete the dark level and touch its flag to return. Stomp on patrol bots, slimes, bats and rolling bots to defeat them; side contact costs a life. Collect tools, then press F or X (or Use tool). Select collected tools with 1 Ray, 2 Coffee, 3 Bowling, 4 Lasso. Tools can be reused. Bowling balls can knock down several enemies.
  12. Water, vines & clouds: Open Nature & new worlds in the building pieces. Paint water to make lakes; stack waterfall tiles. Swim with arrow keys or W/A/S/D. Space paddles upward. Stack vines downward, hold Up near one to grab it, use Left/Right to swing, and press Space to release. Clouds let Bob jump through from below and land on top. Hill up and Hill down make sloping ground. Trees are scenery you can walk through. Try the three new world starters to see examples.
  13. Block puzzles: place Clear blocks to create required one-hit targets. Double-bounce blocks preserve a connecting route: landing changes 2 to 1. Tap Jump in the air to restore 2. Without that extra bounce, the next landing clears the block. Clear all marked blocks and collect every coin to unlock the flag. Try the bounce puzzle starter for a ready-to-play example. Use Colors & textures for pixel-style platform and flag designs.
  14. Discover: place one Portal A and one Portal B for instant two-way travel. A Black hole sends Bob to the Wormhole exit. Place endpoints again to move them. Hidden Secret spaces collect every coin in the current level when touched; Bob still needs to reach the finish flag.
  15. Keep: Save project downloads an editable JSON file. Export playable game downloads an HTML game for teacher review and sharing.

Costumes use a single PNG. All seven Bob costumes change poses while running, jumping, falling, landing, climbing, using portals, and finishing a level. Custom PNG costumes use a small bounce and direction flip. The included Bob costumes use your approved Bob Bank artwork.

BOB’S WAY · FIRST SCRATCH MISSION

My idea. My first Scratch code.

This takes your artwork into Scratch. Your game rules stay in Game Creator. In this first mission, Bob moves over a picture; platforms, coins, doors, and enemies need their own code later.

A · Ask

How can I make my player move left and right?

Choose one level and a player in Game Creator before downloading.

M · Make

3. Open Scratch ↗

Hover over Choose a Backdrop → Upload Backdrop. Choose your -scratch-backdrop.png file.

Hover over Choose a Sprite → Upload Sprite. Choose your -scratch-player.png file. Select your player, then click Code.

I · Improve

Build these two small scripts on your player:

when [right arrow ▾] key pressedchange x by (10)
when [left arrow ▾] key pressedchange x by (-10)

Press each arrow. Did Bob go the right way? Try 5 instead of 10. Which feels better?

G · Grow

Try adding Up and Down scripts using change y by. Positive y moves up; negative y moves down. This moves Bob—it does not add jumping or gravity yet.

Save your Scratch work: File → Save to your computer. Next time: File → Load from your computer.

Tell a partner: “I changed ___, and Bob ___.”

Download your two pictures, then open Scratch. No Scratch sign-in is needed for this first coding activity.
